Activision Blizzard Inc. on Thursday said it sold about 5.6 million copies of "Call of Duty: Black Ops" for 360 million U.S. dollars in the first day of the video game's release in North America and Britain, making it the biggest entertainment launch ever.

The numbers outperformed the previous title "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," which sold 4.7 million copies for 310 million dollars in the first 24 hours on sale last year.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops," a shooter video game and the seventh installment of the "Call of Duty" series, went on sale Tuesday.

The latest release marked the second year in a row that the " Call of Duty" franchise has set day-one launch records across all forms of entertainment, Activision Blizzard noted.

"There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year's five-day global sales record of 550 million dollars," Bobby Kotick, chief executive officer of Activision Blizzard, said in a statement.

"The game's success underscores the pop culture appeal of the brand," Kotick added.
