An off-duty policeman in Kenya has shot dead 10 people - apparently after discovering his girlfriend had given him the HIV virus.

Peter Karanja tried to take hs own life afterwards but had run out of ammunition and surrendered to police.

The killings happened in Siakago, a small town 75 miles (120km) northeast of the capital Nairobi.

"Karanja went from one bar to another and was shooting indiscriminately," police spokesman Charles Owino said.

"Apparently he was looking for his girlfriend."

Mr Owino said the 10 victims included two colleagues who had been sent to tackle the officer.

Karanja went on the rampage after finishing his shift as a guard at the District Commissioners' residence.

Police said they were investigating a number of leads.

One was that Karanja had learned he had HIV and had gone lin search of his girlfriend whom he suspected of infecting him.

Another was that he had flipped after being told his lover was having an affair.

Karanja had a poor disciplinary record and had clashed a number of times with his superiors, a police official revealed.
