Legendary German car maker BMW has also got bitten by the electric car bug as it seems from its latest moves. The company which is known for making luxury Sedans and SUVs for the users with deep wallets is going to make foray in the nascent electric car market. On Friday, the company said that it will invest heavily in making a factory for mass producing the upcoming electric car. The electric car which used to be a fancy concept even a few years back seems to be in vogue these days. The response generated by the Nissan Leaf is a possible reason for this. A source close to the company said that BMW might invest a whopping 400 million Euros or $561 million in this project in the coming days.
The BMW electric car may be manufactured at a plant of the company that makes its popular Series I model. The car has been named Megacity for now, as it has been reported. The leading car makers are concentrating on producing environment friendly cars that do not use fossil fuel. If the Nissan Leaf is a step in the right direction, the Chevrolet Volt is another contender worth mentioning. The proposed Megacity electric vehicles will reportedly be made with carbon fiber to keep the car light weight.
The proposed electric car will be made at the company’s Leipzig plant which was expanded recently. The car will be made by the year 2013, as per the stalwart car manufacturer. The cost of the car is uncertain but given the brand name and lineage it could be on the higher side.
