Cuba's civil aviation authority has said there are no survivors following the crash of a passenger plane carrying 68 people.

AeroCaribbean Flight 883 was en route from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba to the capital Havana when it went down.

After making an emergency call, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers.

All 40 Cubans and 28 foreigners were killed when it crashed in a mountainous area near the village of Guasimal and burst into flames.

Authorities said those from abroad included nine Argentines, seven Mexicans, three Dutch citizens, two Germans, two Austrians, a French citizen, an Italian, a Spaniard, a Venezuelan and a Japanese citizen.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Reports said the flight was one of the last leaving Santiago de Cuba for Havana ahead of tropical storm Tomas.

It set to pass between Cuba's eastern end and the western coast of Haiti on Friday.

The plane was an ATR-72-212 twin turboprop built by ATR, a joint venture of Europe's EADS and Italian group Finmeccanica.

Elsewhere, a small plane has crashed in Pakistan killing all 21 people on board.

The private aircraft chartered to an international oil company went down near the airport in Karachi.

The pilot warned the control tower he was experiencing engine trouble.

He was ordered to return to the airport, but as he was turning the plane it went down in an open field.
