Netflix has managed to build a hugely successful company with their services of allowing users to obtain millions of DVDs by mail, for a monthly fee, in a move which has created a big dent in the movie rental business. Places such as ‘Blockbuster’ have suffered tremendously with the creation of a way for customers to “rent” movies from the comfort of their living-room.
But a recent announcement reveals that Netflix is planning to switch over to a “Streaming Only” service, branching off of the DVD mailing part of their business, and offer a new lower-cost plan in which the users could access movies and television only online.
The streaming only service was started in Canada last month, and was said to have been a big success. For $7.99 a month, customers can pick out a movie online, and watch it immediately, versus waiting for a DVD to come in the mail.
The current subscription plans will still be available to those who want it, such as DVDs by mail, and Internet streaming.
