Lugi Bobbio, mayor of Castellammare di Stabia in Italy, must wait until tonight to discover whether or not the ban on miniskirts which he has proposed will be accepted by the council of his seaside town.

Bobbio insists that he is not trying to ban miniskirts altogether, but only those skirts which are so short that they show women’s underwear. He hopes his ideas will help to “restore urban decorum and facilitate better civil coexistence”.

His other ideas are to ban swearing, and to prohibit football playing in public parks. The mayor states that he only added the miniskirt ban in order to stop the display of female flesh in public areas other than beaches. Police will check the hemlines of women’s skirts, and if found to be against the ordinance, the proposed fines would be up to €500 (£445).

Although the council will not vote on the proposal until 6 pm UK time, it seems as though the mayor has enough council support to pass it through. Women of the town, however, are not very happy, and have scheduled a sit-in protest.

Miniskirt bans have been proposed in Kenyan, Uganda, and other UK are as well as in Chile. Some of those proposals went through and others did not. Many job places are also banning miniskirts, and several schools have banned skirts altogether, asking girls to wear pants instead.
