Twenty-seven people were killed and over 50 others were missing as typhoon Talas continued to ravage central and western Japan, Xinhua reported Monday.

A search for the missing people was on in Nara and Wakayama prefectures, police said. Rescuers Monday found a body of a missing elderly man from Totsukawa village in Nara.

The toll from the typhoon was expected to increase. It has damaged roads, caused floods, mudslides, and also hampered the relief work.

The storm made landfall on Shikoku island Saturday. It was the most powerful storm to hit Japan since 2004 when typhoon Tokage left scores of people dead or missing.

On Monday, it moved north along the Sea of Japan, triggering heavy rain in central Japan’s Tokai region.
