Umar Patek, the alleged mastermind of the 2002 Bali bombings who was held in Pakistan, arrived in Indonesia Thursday to face trial, Xinhua reported.
“Patek arrived today (Thursday) at 7.00 a.m. and afterward he was brought to the Marko Brimob Kelapa Dua (prison)” in Jakarta, Police Chief General Timur Pradopo said.
Ansyaad Mbai, head of anti-terrorist agency, said Patek will be charged with murder and possession of explosives.
The alleged bomber of the militant group Jemaah Islamiyah was suspected of playing a key role in the suicide bombings at two night clubs in the Indonesian island of Bali in 2002 that killed 202 people. Most of the victims were Australian holidaymakers.
He was also suspected to be involved in blasts in churches during Christmas in Jakarta in 2000.
Patek, allias Abu Syaeikh or Umar Arab, escaped from Indonesia in 2003. The US had put $1 million bounty on his head. He was captured by Pakistani authorities in January this year.
Since his arrest, the Indonesian Police had been negotiating with Pakistan for bringing him to the country.
The Jemaah Islamiyah has been accused of carrying out suicide bombings in Indonesia since 2000, which killed over 270 people.
