Sixteen people were killed when an inter-provincial bus plunged into a river in South Tapanuli of Indonesia's North Sumatra province on Sunday, the Jakarta Globe daily reported on Monday.

'The bus accident was the biggest (of its kind) this year,' the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) chairman Danang Parikesit said.

The accident occurred when the bus, on en route from the provincial capital city of Medan to Bengkulu province, passed a steep road in Sipirok sub-district of South Tapanuli regency, according to North Sumatra Police.

Unable to climb the steep road, the bus, with 65 people aboard, went backward and rolled down the road until it fell into the river. Forty-nine people survived but 16 others were killed. The victims' bodies were taken to Sipirok Hospital.

The efforts to pull the bus out of the water were halted last night due to heavy rain.
