Actor Charlie Sheen has congratulated Ashton Kutcher for replacing him on US TV show Two And A Half Men.

Sheen was sacked after a public row with the programme's producer and there was speculation about whether he would be replaced or the comedy would end.

Kutcher teased his Twitter fans by asking them "What's the square root of 6.25?" on Friday, before adding "Thank you for all the Congrats on 2.5. Met with the team this morning.... We are already working on earning your Laughter".

CBS Television and Warner Brothers released a statement about the appointment, calling him the "multi-talented Kutcher, whose success spans film, television and social media".

They have not yet announced whether Kutcher will simply replace Sheen in the character of Charlie Harper, or will be introduced as a new character.

Kutcher started on television in the comedy series That '70s Show, before starring in a string of movies including What Happens in Vegas, Valentine's Day and more recently No Strings Attached with Oscar-winner Natalie Portman.

Sheen has since congratulated him, also on Twitter. He wished Kutcher well, adding: "The show must go on... You got the right guy!"

Sheen was fired in March and is suing Warner Brothers studios for $100m for alleged breach of contract.

The troubled star has boasted of drug binges but during a series of interviews and public appearances before and after his dismissal claimed to have single-handedly defeated his addiction.

Production of the ninth season of the Emmy Award-nominated series begins in the summer and will be broadcast in the US in the autumn.
