Tornado warnings are in effect across the US Midwest after a series of twisters tore through suburbs and farming communities, killing possibly more than 500 people.
The estimated death toll in this storm season makes it the deadliest year since 1953.
The giant weather system, which has spawned dozens of spinning funnels, passed over several states including Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinois and Arkansas.
Sirens were sounded in Kansas City, one of Missouri's biggest urban areas on Wednesday afternoon, sending hundreds in search of safety.
Storm chasers in the region captured a series of extraordinary images on mobile phones and camcorders.
Robert Hettchen, of KDR Media, watched a large tornado form over Canton Lake, Oklahoma, as his terrified passenger filmed the event. The sequence, reminiscent of the movie Twister, was broadcast around the world.
In Chickasha, Oklahoma, a 26-year-old woman who had refused to leave her home was killed when a tornado upended trailers at a park.
In Joplin, Missouri, they are still searching for dozens of missing residents after Sunday's deadly twister left more than 120 dead - the worst toll from a single tornado in the US since modern records began.
Authorities said 750 people were injured and many more missing in the town, where shocked residents were digging their belongings out of the ruins of their homes.
Joplin city official Mark Rohr said: "We are still in search and rescue mode, and will be for the foreseeable future."
Actor Brad Pitt, who grew up near Joplin, told reporters: "My thoughts are certainly with them.
"Of course a lot will be coming out in the next few days and they have a big mountain ahead of them."
President Obama says he will visit the affected areas after his European trip and is in regular contact with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Emergencies have been declared in several states which means federal funds to help those in need should flow more quickly.
