The success of the fingerprint reader in conventional computers is being translated to the mobile phones. Motorola has taken the lead in the world of mobile fingerprint reader by launching its smartphone Atrix.

The phone requires a user to have the fingerprint scanned before access is given. Features like making calls, access to the web and game play all require the user to activate the phone with a fingerprint swipe. The technology means there is no need to use access code to activate the phone.

The company hopes that the new technology will in a way help curb the increasing instances of smartphone thefts. The personal nature that the phone has taken makes a smartphone a target for criminals. Information stored on the phone are often exploited which might help criminals to assume the identity of the original owner. The phone is also expected to provide privacy and minimize misuse.

Users who get the phone will have to run their finger over the fingerprint reader slowly. Orange will be providing services to the phone. A spokesperson for Orange in the United Kingdom told reporters that, “This technology is the direction mobile phones are going in.”
