Egypt's Muslims Brotherhood (MB) on Wednesday officially submitted the legal papers of its recently created political party "Freedom and Justice" to the party affairs committee for approval.
Coptic intellectual Rafiq Habib was picked as the deputy head of the new party for foreign relations, the party's secretary general Mohamed Saad el-Katatni said in a press conference after submitting the required papers for the party's recognition.
The papers included its founders' statements, programs and statute.
Katatni said the party's founding members have reached nearly 9, 000, including 978 women and 93 Copts.
"The party is open to all Egyptians, Muslims and Copts alike," he said, adding "now we kept our word and appointed Dr. Rafiq Habib as deputy chairman of the party."
The new party asserted in a statement that it seeks a civil state based on religion.
"Egypt is a civil country with religious reference," the statement said, stressing that Islam is the official state religion with guaranteeing all rights and freedoms of the Coptic people.
The Muslim Brotherhood, one of Egypt's most powerful political forces, announced on April 30 to form its own party to contest up to half the parliamentary seats in the elections scheduled for September.
Through their political party, the Muslim Brotherhood group plans to intensify its programs to gain public support for the upcoming parliamentary elections, which is considered for the MB members as the party's first real test.
The group has already announced that it will not nominate a presidential candidate in the presidential election later this year.
The Brotherhood's Shura Council (consultative council) decided in a meeting to form its own Freedom and Justice Party and adopted the party's program.
