Austrian authorities have sent inspectors to 33 supermarkets to make sure Spanish vegetables suspected of contamination with a potentially fatal bacteria have been taken off shelves.
The E. coli bacteria has killed at least 10 people in Germany, and hundreds across Europe have become ill.
Health officials on Sunday announced an immediate recall and sales ban of Spanish cucumbers, tomatoes and eggplants that had been delivered to 33 stores in the Alpine republic by German companies.
In Poland on Monday, officials said a woman has been hospitalized in serious condition after returning from a trip to the northern German city of Hamburg where at least 467 cases of intestinal infection have been recorded.
