Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage has been charged by police in New Orleans after being accused of getting drunk and arguing with his wife Alice Kim in the street.

Officers said the couple were in front of a property that Cage insisted they were renting.

She said it was not theirs, and Cage, who won an Academy Award for his lead role in the 1995 film Leaving Las Vegas, then grabbed her arm, police added.

Officers said Cage, 47, started hitting vehicles and tried to get into a taxi.

A police officer saw that Cage was drunk and told him to get out of the cab, it is claimed.

Authorities said Cage, who was reportedly in New Orleans to film a movie, then started shouting at the officer.

The star of Face/Off and Con Air is accused of getting drunk in the city's French Quarter on Friday evening.

Cage has been charged with domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public drunkenness.

The local sheriff's office said the actor was detained in Orleans Parish Prison.

He has since been released after bail was set at $11,000 (£6,700).

Cage is reportedly due to appear in court on May 31.

He has been a frequent visitor to New Orleans, where he has owned property and made films in the past.

An agent for Cage has not commented on the incident.
