Three baby Komodo dragons, all under one year of age, have been reported missing from the Surabaya Zoo.
A first baby Komodo dragon went missing on March 1 and was followed by the disappearance of two more on March 5, a zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat said on Tuesday
The three were placed in a special display cage along with 18 other baby Komodo in December.
“We haven’t even figured out their sexes because it was still rather hard to determine [at such an early age],” Agus said.
Agus declined to speculate on the whereabouts of the animals or if they were dead. “We haven’t received any reports on dead Komodo dragons.”
Zoo chief Tony Sumampu filed a police report on the missing animals on Monday, Agus said.
“Pak Tony contacted Surabaya Police chief Sr. Comr. Coki Manurung,” he added.
Surabaya Police criminal unit chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Anom Wibowo said officers would investigate.
