This year’s Cherry Blossom Festival have been affected by the radiation fears in Japan.
Japan with its array of shops has been a popular destination for tourists all over the world during the annual event. However with the damage at the Fukushima power plant and the subsequent release of radiation, tourists have been cancelling their orders with their tour guides as the festival draws near.
The festival would start this weekend and end on the 10th of April. Ando Cloissone is one of the most popular shops for tourists during the festival. At the peak of the season, the shop can make up to ten percent of its annual sales. The manager of the shop, Shigeyuki Ando, said that, “We get a lot of visitors from China, Russia and other places during the cherry blossom season, but after the tragic destruction it’s hard to see many tourists coming this year.”
It is believed that the tourists are shunning Japan mainly due to the fact that people are not getting adequate information on the radiation leak. The Japanese authorities have not been convincing in assuring that the country is safe for tourists.
