An activist has confirmed that a city administration in the Netherlands is planning to name one of its streets after murdered Indonesian human rights activist Munir Said Thalib.
“It's true, city officials in Den Haag [The Hague] conveyed it in a meeting with Suciwati, Munir's wife,” Haris Azhar, from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Radio Nederland Wereldomroep Indonesia reported on Tuesday that The Hague's city administration promised in a meeting with Suciwati on the previous day that they would give the name Munirstraat, or Munir Street, to one of its streets.
Munir, a human rights activist, was murdered by arsenic poisoning aboard a Garuda plane heading to Amsterdam in 2004.
Suciwati is planning to request that the Supreme Court review her civil case against PT Garuda Indonesia.
The court has granted her request for Garuda and pilot Pantun Matondang, who was flying the aircraft Munir was on when he was murdered, to pay her compensation.
However it failed to grant several other requests, including forcing the airline to make a public apology and build a statue of her deceased husband.
