A family court in Canberra, Australia has allowed a 17-year-old girl to begin hormone treatment to become a man after hearing her torment as a girl.

China Press quoted a report in the Australian New Express Daily which said the teenager, referred to as Rosie in the court, was diagnosed with gender identity disorder and believed she was a boy since she was a toddler.

The court heard that when she was a two-year-old, Rosie had asked her father, during their shower together, if she could have an operation to get a penis. By the age of three, Rosie was refusing to wear girl's clothes and begged her parents to give her a boy's name.

The court heard Rosie became depressed and wore tight vests to stop her breasts growing after she attained puberty.

Justice Linda Dessau said Rosie had grown 'tormented, angry and anti-social.'

She said her decision to allow Rosie to begin hormone treatment was made easier as the teenager's parents and doctors supported the move. However, the ruling does not extend to Rosie having a sex-change surgery.
