Kirishima volcano in southern Japan continues to spew hot ash across the region, closing an airport and affecting a nearby prefectural capital of Miyazaki.

The ash plume rose to nearly three kilometers for the first time in 52 years.

The alert level remains at three, meaning the area around the volcano must be evacuated.
