Debts forced a desperate French retired man to kill his mother, wife and daughter before committing suicide on Tuesday in the northern town of Amiens, local media reported Wednesday.

A 62-year-old man had cut the throats of his wife and 33-year-old daughter before hanging himself. He also killed his mother, whose body was discovered in her flat in Amiens.

The indebted man left a suicide note, in which he unveiled the reason of his action citing thousands of euros (thousands of U.S. dollars) of consumption debts.

The three bodies were discovered when mayor of Pont-de-Metz Gerard Arlacon, an usher and a policeman went to the family to make an inventory of equipment before a referral.

"This is a debt tragedy. We did know about the financial problem of this family which was quiet and did not pose any problems," Mayor Arlacon told Europe 1 radio.
