A British businessman is to be extradited to France to face trial over the killing of his millionairess girlfriend.

Ian Griffin, 41, was arrested on June 1, 2009, after the battered body of 36-year-old Kinga Legg was found in a Paris hotel suite.

The tycoon allegedly fled the £1,000-a-night Hotel Le Bristol in his Porsche 911, which was later recovered at an address in Warrington, Cheshire, where he grew up.

A European arrest warrant was issued after a maid discovered Ms Legg's body in the bathroom of the suite.

District Judge Daphne Wickham, sitting at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, has now ordered his extradition.

Griffin did not appear at the hearing because he was being treated at St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, for kidney problems.

The tycoon has made several attempts to harm himself since he was remanded in custody, including twice slashing his wrist, the court heard.

The extradition hearing had been postponed because Griffin was deemed "unfit" to appear in court.

This prompted psychiatric reports on the businessman, who ran tanning salons and gadget shops across the North West but was declared bankrupt four years ago.

District Judge Wickham's judgment said Griffin was addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs, and suffered with depression, anxiety and mood swings.

But the psychiatric reports said he was fit to plead.

Griffin is accused of killing his girlfriend between May 23 and 25, 2009.

Polish-born Ms Legg died from internal bleeding as a result of her injuries, French police said.

She made her fortune running her family business Vegex, which supplied tomatoes to British supermarkets.
