LIKE most Sundays, the son, daughter and son-in-law of retiree Ho Tack Thiam picked him up at the Econ Nursing Home at Buangkok Green and took him out for lunch on Aug 29, 2010.

The 81-year-old never made it back. He had choked on some noodles, lost consciousness and died in Tan Tock Seng Hospital two days later.

At the coroner inquiry on Tuesday, the court returned a verdict of misadventure.

Investigations revealed that family members were eating at YY Kafei Dian coffee shop along Beach Road when Mr Ho started choking. First aid was rendered but he went into cardiac arrest upon arrival at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He revived after resuscitation and needed life support to sustain blood pressure and breathing.

Doctors noticed signs of severe brain injury following the cardiac arrest and his family was informed of his poor chances of recovery. When his blood pressure and blood oxygen levels fell two days later, the family decided to take off life support at about 1pm. He died soon after.

The court heard that Mr Ho had dementia and high blood pressure. A medical report also indicated that noodles were seen blocking his throat during resuscitation and the cause of death was consistent with choking on food. The sternum and rib fractures were likely to have been caused by the resuscitation efforts, the report added. No family members were present at the inquiry.
