President Obama has made a surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan, telling them they are making progress in the country.

During a three hour visit to Bagram Air Field, the President said US forces would succeed but "difficult days are ahead".

He did not meet with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai because of bad weather but spoke to him on the phone.

Relations between the two men are said to be strained after leaked WikiLeaks cables showed the US viewed the Afghan leader as "weak and indecisive".

The visit is Mr Obama's second to Afghanistan and comes days before an important review into the nine-year conflict.

It will access and recommend changes to the strategy the President rolled out a year ago when 30,000 additional US troops were sent to Afghanistan.

Mr Obama is under pressure to demonstrate progress in the country.

He has set a date of mid-2011 to begin a US withdrawal with Nato saying Afghan forces will take full control by 2014.
