All the 24 hostages held by an armed student at a Wisconsin high school have been released unharmed Monday evening when the teen hostage taker shot himself, local media report said.

The hostage taker shot himself when police broke into the classroom. No other injuries were reported.

Police officers entered the Marinette High School classroom after hearing gunshots at about 8 p.m. and then the 15-year-old male armed student shot himself, said Police Chief Jeff Skorik.

The rest of the students evacuated from the classroom and the injured hostage taker was taken to hospital and his condition remained unknown on Monday night, Skorik said.

The hostage crisis lasted more than five hours after the student armed with a gun burst into a classroom of Marinette High School and took 23 classmates and a teacher hostage there.

Police said that a school administrator called authorities just before 4 p.m. to report the incident.

One of the hostages said the armed student burst into the classroom, pulled out a gun and shot at the projector when students were watching a film. In order to help the gunman calm down, the students tried to engage him in some casual talk about hunting and fishing.

Skorik announced at about 8 p.m. that five out of the 23 student hostages were released after they convinced the hostage taker they wanted to use the bathroom. The other hostages then were also released unharmed.

The young male student took over the classroom near the end of the school day on Monday, allowing no one to leave and eventually communicating with police through the female teacher by phone.

Police said the motivation of the armed student remains unclear. But they have been able to identify the student and contacted his family since the standoff started. The student would be reunited with his family in hospital.
