Interim President Sekouba Konate declared a state of emergency in Guinea Wednesday because of deadly violence following a disputed election.
In an announcement read on national radio, the government said at least nine people have been killed this week, CNN reported. Violent clashes between political factions and between the factions and security forces have been reported from the capital, Conakry, and other cities.
Since Guinea became independent in 1958, it has been ruled by a series of strongmen. After an agreement in January to hold democratic elections, the vote was postponed several times and was finally held Nov. 7.
Alpha Conde, a 72-year-old, longtime opposition leader who has been imprisoned several times, won 52.5 percent of the vote in the runoff. The loser, former Prime Minister Cello Salein Diallo, who won 44 percent of the vote in the first round and 47.5 percent in the runoff, says the result was fraudulent.
