A pensioner has been scarred for life after robbers left a hot iron strapped on his back to try
and force him to reveal the whereabouts of his household safe.
Retired builder David Ward was asleep at his home in the village of Sewardstonebury, Essex, with partner Ann Woodland when he awoke to find two men standing in the bedroom.
They were wearing balaclavas and boiler suits.
The men handcuffed the couple together and demanded to know where their safe was - and would not believe the 69-year-old when he said he did not have one.
At first, the burglars held a cold iron to Ms Woodland but then went on to strap it to Mr Ward, and turn it on.
"It was there for half an hour," she said. "I was next to David as he was burning.
"He didn't even murmur as he didn't want to wake my granddaughter."
The attackers then threatened to pour boiling water over Ms Woodland's three-year-old granddaughter.
"I became hysterical when they said they were going to boil the kettle to pour over her. What kind of animals threaten that to a child? They are just barbaric."
Mr Ward was left with horrific injuries to his back and his leg.
The robbers fled finally, taking with them jewellery worth around £100,000 including Rolex and Patek Philippe watches.
The couple eventually regained their freedom after the little girl woke up and managed to pass them the keys to the handcuffs.
They are offering a £10,000 reward for information leading to the burglars' conviction.
Essex Police said: "It is extremely rare to see violence like this used."
