A road side sign has been a source of confusion in China. The country has erected a monkey road sign for pedestrians and it is not immediately clear who the sign warns. What makes the sign so baffling is the fact that one side of the road sign has a human pedestrian road mark and while the other side has the monkey crossing.
A local at the town where the road sign was erected said sarcastically that, “We have heard of zebra crossings but never a monkey crossing. What are we supposed to do, swing over the road?” Another resident had another explanation for the whole sign. He said that, “It means to put a fool in a powerful position - and we have enough of those running the town”. Those were some nice words for the people at the helm of affairs in the town who erected the road sign without educating the locals.
The Chinese have a wonderful proverb for such leaders. The country’s age long proverb “putting hat on a monkey” means that putting incompetent people at the helm of affairs and it seems that is what some Chinese believe have happened with the erection of such signboard.
