A train collision in a town of Pemalang district of Central Java province early Saturday killed at least 33 people and seriously injured dozens others, a rescuer at Search and Rescue Office in the province said.
After hours of evacuation, there still has one severely damaged carriage that could not be entered by rescuers, said Rindang Krisnoputro.
"According to the rescuers at the scene, 33 were killed and there are still dozens of people being trapped," he told Xinhua over phone from province.
Train Argo Bromo Anggrek collided with train Bisnis Senja Jaya at about 03:00 a.m. local time in Petarukan town of Pemalang district, he said.
The accident was caused by the violation of rules by train Argo Bromo, he said.
Three railway coaches derailed after the coalition, he said.
The wounded persons were rushed to two nearby hospitals, said Krisnoputro. "Their condition is very horrible, with most of them suffering from broken bones and other serious injuries," said Krisnoputro.
