IRANIAN President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used a primetime US chat show appearance to attack the Israeli Prime Minister as a "skilled killer" who should be put on trial for human rights abuses.

Mr Ahmadinejad was taking part in an extended interview on CNN's Larry King Live ahead of his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

He told the celebrity interviewer that Iran did not want nuclear weapons, US sanctions were fruitless and human rights violations in America were similar to those experienced under his regime.

Most of Mr Ahmadinejad’s contentions went unchallenged as King struggled to adjust to his unusually combative guest. When the chat show mainstay asked the president whether he was worried that Mr Netanyahu’s fear of Iran could prompt a pre-emptive strike, Mr Ahmadinejad launched into a rant.

“So, you think we should be concerned about allaying Mr Netanyahu’s fears? Who is he? He is a skilled killer. All dictators in the world have condemned others,” he said, through a translator.
“He should be put on trial for killing Palestinians, for placing Gaza under siege which is against the law and the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations. He should be put on trial for killing women and children and you want to allay his fears?”

Mr Ahmadinejad demanded to know why the US media was so determined to defend Israel.
King, who is famed for his gentle interrogation technique, attempted to explain the country’s historic association with the Jewish community but the Iranian leader continued.

“The US should stop using taxpayers’ money to support [Netanyahu],” he said.
“There are 30, 40 million poor people in this country, about four million homeless people. Why should this money go to him - this is terrible.”

During his annual round of interviews in the week of the General Assembly, Mr Ahmadinejad has repeatedly drawn parallels between criticisms of Iran and the US.
